About Us

Ministry

The words "Church Ministry Program", or simply "Church Ministry", refer to any person, persons, program or organization of the Church, who or which, alone and together, labors in love to accomplish the work of God's Holy Church here on Earth.

There are many ways to join in service at St John's Parish. Contact the Parish Office if you are interested in any of these Ministries at 403-275-6500 or office@stjohnsparish.ca

Eucharistic Service Coordinator

Parishioners, generally experienced as Lectors or Eucharistic Ministers, willing to come approx. 20 minutes before Mass starts, to ensure the scheduled Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and Altar Servers are present, and if not, to find alternates at each of the week-end Masses.

Hospitality / Ushers

Parishioners, generally welcoming, prepared to genuinely greet parishioners and visitors as they arrive, and refer any questions to the appropriate person. Parishioners conversant with the physical set-up of our church, to show new and visiting parishioners to the pews, assist with offertory collections and respond to unforeseen circumstances.

Lectors

Parishioners, willing and capable of proclaiming, rather than reading, the Word of the Lord; must be able to proclaim clearly, slowly and reverently.

Eucharistic Ministers

Those, respectful of the Eucharist, willing to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ to fellow parishioners during Liturgical celebrations.

Altar Servers

Male and female parishioners, generally youth, with a fair understanding of the sequence of our celebration, and a willingness to learn and serve. 

Musicians & Choirs

Probably the most demanding of ministries, these involve any parishioners willing to practice and sing once weekly, and others able and willing to play a musical instrument or act as cantor.

Sacristans

Parishioners knowledgeable or willing to learn local liturgical procedures, to set up and prepare for liturgical celebrations.

Small Linens

Parishioners willing to pick up, launder and iron the small linens used during liturgical celebrations and return them the following week.

Church Environment Committee

Anyone willing to help enhance the church in keeping with the Church’s guidelines, and the liturgical season.

FAITH DEVELOPMENT

Rite of Christian Initiation as Adults (RCIA)/Teens (RCIT)/ Children (RCIC). Parishioners willing to serve as resource persons in a process for those who wish to join the Catholic Church. Full guidance, beginning with the Inquiry stage, continuing through the Catechumenate and culminating in full membership at the Easter Vigil.

Infant Baptism

Parishioners working with parents wishing to have their children baptized.

First Communion

Parishioners willing to assist with the sacramental program for children in Grade 2 and up and their parents.

First Reconciliation

Parishioners willing to assist with the sacramental preparation program for children in Grade 4 and up and their parents.

Confirmation

Parishioners willing to help prepare young people of Grade 6 and up for the sacrament and to help them experience the church as a vibrant, life-giving body that nourishes them spiritually, socially and educationally.

Children’s Liturgy

Parishioners helping children to understand the gospel, providing readings to children at a level appropriate to their understanding in a separate environment during Sunday Mass.

Marriage Preparation 

Sponsor couples willing to work with couples who are wishing to get married in our parish.

Social Committee

Parishioners willing to assist in the planning and preparation of social events for the parish.

Pastoral Council

An advisory body, representing all the parish, promoting pastoral activity to help the parish set and achieve its goals. This group meets the fourth Thursday of each month and members need to make the commitment to attend each meeting.

Finance Council

One of the three advisory bodies to the Pastor, this council, composed of parish members, deals with the financial and administrative aspects of parish life. This group meets the first Thursday of each month and members need to make the commitment to attend each meeting.

Liturgy Committee

The third advisory board, representing all the different ministries involved in the liturgical life of the parish, plans liturgical celebrations for all the seasons of the parish year. This committee meets the third Thursday of each month and members need to make the commitment to attend each meeting.

Building Committee

A committee of individuals who would work with the Pastor in achieving the goal of building St. John’s Church. This committee meets the second Thursday of each month and members need to make the commitment to attend each meeting.

Stewardship Committee 

Stewardship is an expression of discipleship, with the power to change how we understand and live out our lives. Disciples who practice stewardship recognize God as the origin of life, the giver of freedom, the source of all they have and are and will be. They know themselves to be recipients and caretakers of God’s many gifts. They are grateful for what they have received and eager to cultivate their gifts out of love for God and one another.

Youth Ministry

Any parishioner, interested in young people, willing to assist in offering opportunities for them to integrate more fully into parish life and maturity of faith.

Youth Group

Youth in junior and senior high school interested in meeting other youth in our parish.

Parish/School Liaison 

A Parishioner who would act as a liaison between St. John’s and St. Elizabeth Seton and St. Jerome Schools.

Coffee Time Host

Individuals who would like to assist in set-up and serving coffee and refreshments after the Mass.

Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal, international organization of Catholic men. We enliven the social side of parish life, and strive to enhance all aspects of the parish in conjunction with the parish priest and the other existing organizations. New members are always welcome.

Pastoral Care of the Sick Mature parishioners willing to commit to visiting hospitals, long term care facilities or taking Eucharist to shut-ins. Pastoral care course, available through the Diocese, is required.

Prayer Chain

Individuals who would provide prayer support to the parishioners of St. John’s when they are in need.

Bereavement Ministry

Parishioners willing to take both a pastoral care course and a bereavement training course, who are willing to reach out and journey in faith with others grieving the death of a loved one.

SOCIAL JUSTICE Annual Bishop’s Appeal (ABA)

Serving on a committee planning methods to encourage contributions to the annual financial appeal for the charitable needs of the Diocese.

Ministry to the Poor

Open to those committed to the poor, serving food hampers, financial assistance, or just being there with time, talent or treasure.

Development and Peace**

Individuals who would promote and implement Development & Peace’s Action and Education programs and activities, report to the Diocesan Council and attend Diocesan Council workshops and meetings.
